A republic is a form of government in which the people, or some significant portion of them, have supreme control over the government and where offices of state are elected or chosen by elected people. In modern times, a common simplified definition of a republic is a government where the head of state is not a monarch.
Democracy is a system of government in which the citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives from among themselves to form a governing body, such as a parliament. Democracy is generally associated with ideas of political freedom and equality. It is often used as a synonym for liberal democracy, which is a variant of representative democracy that may include elements such as political pluralism, equal opportunity and the rule of law.
