The terms lawyer and attorney are often used interchangeably, however they are not the same. A lawyer is a person who has been legally trained and is qualified to give legal advice. An attorney is a lawyer who has been legally appointed to represent a client in a court of law.
A lawyer can provide advice on legal matters, draft documents, and may even represent a client in court. However, an attorney is the only person who is qualified to actually represent a client before a judge or jury. In addition, an attorney may be able to assist with certain legal matters outside of court, such as filing documents with the court or negotiating settlements.
