Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how a person thinks, feels, behaves and functions. Symptoms of depression include feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, and emptiness. People with depression may have difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or making decisions. They may also have thoughts of suicide. Depression is usually treated with medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.
